Parent Bashing & the Poverty of Culture
4 December 2001 Lynnell Mickelsen assures parents who are shopping around for the right public school in Minneapolis: "Relax. Yours will turn out fine. Or they won't. Either way the school won't have much to do with it. Because most of the time, It's the family, stupid."
5 December 2001. If the school district admitted that poor and unequal educational outcomes were due, in large part, to unequal resource allocation and practices like ability grouping, they would have to do something about it. Instead, they
are sticking to their courtroom strategy.
"My advice to parents: worry, and demand excellent and equitable schools for all."

5 December 2001 The idea that reading instruction doesn't ordinarily happen in the Minneapolis Public Schools may sound ridiculous. Reading is a fundamental academic skill, a prerequisite for effective participation in classroom activities that fill a large part of a child's day, even in the early elementary grades.
However, it is self evident that effective reading instruction doesn't happen because so many MPS students do not learn to read well, and many don't learn to read at all, including students who have been continously enrollled in the Minneapolis Public Schools from Kindergarten to grade 3 and beyond. Moreover, the opinion expressed by many school administrators, parents, and teachers that effective reading instruction can't be done in the classroom indicates that responsibility for reading instruction is often delegated to the parents by default.
